it was amazing

I haven't written this yet but it will be okay. Food is delicious.

UPDATE: I have created a Word File entitled Hunger_Book. I have copied and pasted many Tumblr entries into this file along with some ideas as to how to give the book shape. Food is still delicious.

UPDATE 2: This book is still in progress so your low ratings are funny. Is this a motivational tool? It's working.

Meredith Turits This is the best.

Julie Ehlers I will put it on my to-read list.

Melanie Page Luckily, I have a category called "weight and food" on my ŷ shelves!

message 4: by Larry (new)

Larry Berthold Amen.

Melanie Page Last night I was thinking about what happens when I go to the doctor. To have a mole removed, they first weigh me. To look at a cyst that ruptured near my eyeball, they first weigh me. To check out my sinuses, to see if they are infected, they first weigh me.

I don't know if you really haven't started this book, but I really, really hope you include something about the fat shaming that goes on in the medical field.

message 6: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie Teekell Melanie, I thought I was the only one bothered by that. I never weigh myself in the day-to-day and loathe being weighed at the doctor's. It's just mind games I don't want. I need to research ways of getting out of this.

Melanie Page I've also learned that that information goes to insurance companies and can be used against you!--at least, it could before the ACA. I have no idea what it's like now, as my husband earned a job that has health insurance.

Jaimie, there are statistics out there that SCARE ME about how many people--fat, obese, a little overweight, whatever--who do not go to the doctor unless they are practically dead because they are so ashamed and afraid of being weighed. I've been googling like crazy for half an hour, and of course I can't find any stats now. Gah! There are lots of great blogs about people who now refuse to be weighed at the doctor's, which I think is great. If you are there for a yearly physical or actually need to be weighed to determine something, great! But not every visit, every clinic, every time.

Andrea Melanie and Jaimie--It is so nice to know I am not the only one who dreads being weighed at those appointments!

Andrea And I'm really looking forward to reading this book!

Richard Thomas yeah, what is that, people giving out 1-star reviews to books that haven't even been written yet? you mark it "to-read" but, no, you're pretty sure it'll be horrible. i get people marking it as "to-read" with 5-stars, though, seems like people mean, "REALLY CAN'T WAIT TO READ THIS." people.

message 12: by Katie (new) - added it

Katie so excited. i've long thought your blog entries with life stuff/cooking should be book-bound!

Melanie Page I've asked people why they rated a book 1 star that is either not published or mostly 4 and 5 stars. The answer I get is typically that they bumped a button on their iPhone or iPad and can't figure out how to remove the damn thing. As in, they didn't read the book and don't want to, but somehow clicked the button. Have you ever noticed removing something from your lists is not intuitive. I'm sure people don't mean any harm (and some don't even realize they did it), but it is frustrating.

Roxane, people giving this un-written book low ratings are Orwell's Thought Police. Didn't you know?

donny I lo I'll give it a good book ve to read books all the time

message 16: by Sally (new)

Sally It's enlightening to read the comments about being weighed. We use that measurement to help us dose high-risk medications for example. Health care professionals are terrible at guesstimating!

Sarah Obsesses over Books & Cookies i can't wait to read this!!

Megan Anderson I just had my order canceled by Amazon. Are you not publishing this? It seems like a hard book to write- I was very excited to read it! Take care!

Emma Deplores ŷ Censorship From the author's Twitter account, apparently the book is coming out late this year - not next week as stated on GR. This explains why Amazon isn't currently selling it.

Gillian Hollett My pre-order got canceled! I was so excited to read this today! Best of luck on getting it finished... I can't wait to read it. :)

Brown Girl Reading Can't wait!

Sally I'm looking forward to reading the book! Also, I dread getting weighed at the doctor's office.

Jenn This book was delayed to likely June 2017. See the article here.

message 24: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie Landino Jamie T. I KNOW this is a very late comment , but just tell them no. I do. I am in charge of MY medical business. I also tell my Doctor when I DON'T want something in the electronic medical records that are mine. She's excellent , my Doc. We work together truly. If we disagree we talk ABOUT IT ! I research and come prepared if it's something of importance to me. I usually ALWAYS let them weigh me. Especially if it's been months between having seen her. She never shames me. I'm good for that myself. She we help me talk about changing what I DON'T like. Ask how I'm doing on things I've shared with her , but never nags or pushes me, but she also is not a Dr. that lets things go either. Been with her for over twenty years. We get on great , and think alike. I hope you can tell YOUR Dr. how you feel or look for another Doc. your comfortable with. You do NOT have to put up with feeling shamed at your Drs. office with anyone ! DON'T accept that! Good luck , if you get this, wish I'd seen it earlier and don't know how I even happened on this in ŷ , lol, Bonnie

Maggie The writing of this book sounds like an act of courage. Well done!

Prachi Mishra This book has only 5 stars on goodreads-nothing else!!!!I have to read this.

message 27: by Nadja (new)

Nadja I love you

Lauren Roxane, you are the best.

Emily I've only read the first few pages, but thank you for writing it! You are brave and brilliant but (unlike many people) also aware of how vulnerable and flawed we all are...

Giselle Just saw your interview on the Daily Show. As someone who has struggled with her weight her whole life I can relate to what you talk about. I'm looking forward to reading the book.

Taylor I just started reading it today and can't put it down. Thank you for turning your experiences into words.

message 32: by Sara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sara Love love love love love.

Nicole Foster Thanks for sharing your story with us Roxanne x

message 34: by Katie (last edited Jul 02, 2017 11:26AM) (new) - added it

Katie This book is so haunting that I'm in the middle of it, and while I can't put it down I also have to read every single sentence again just so I can take in the language and emotion. So lovely, so brilliant, so raw. AMEN for standing up to diet culture and the patriarchal ridiculousness legitimized and overtly encouraged by our 2017 world. I love you, Roxane Gay!

Anita Roxane this is one of the bravest, most heartbreakingly honest books I have ever read. You're a hero. Thank you.

message 36: by Dellabunny (new) - added it

Dellabunny thank you for the book Roxane! this is touching and i feel i see myself in ur book

Clayre Benzadon Thank you so much for this. I'm so glad you could finally have the space available to you (your writing) after you've felt like you haven't in so many ways. For being so vulnerable. Much love ❤️

Marian Thompson This book is amazing! Your truth is the truth of so many including myself. I tend to be an odd duck so I am going to be more odd and say that I am now officially obsessed with you and all of your books. Thank you for writing this, and if I'm ever blessed enough to meet you in person I won't force a hug on you. ❤️🤗

message 39: by Toni (new) - rated it 4 stars

Toni I'm reading and listening to your book Roxanne, and I just keep yelling at your 12 year old self to please tell your parents. To go through something so horrific, so young, and to bear the burden alone, oh I wept for you.

Felice I love this book. I love this book. I am so glad you finished your word document. Thank you thank you.

message 41: by Charlene (new)

Charlene Ryan Roxane, I really enjoyed this book, the honesty and emotion that you share with us is very courageous. I am puzzled of your continued attraction to your rapist. I am under the impression he is the person that you think of every day and know how to contact at any time. Maybe you will write more on this point in the future?

Chrisiant This is the bravest thing I've ever read. I am so sorry you have had so much pain for so long, and I'm amazed and grateful that you made such a beautiful and generous thing despite/because of that. Thank you thank you for sharing your experience.

SaraEve One of the most necessary read of the year. Thank you for this.

Rebecca Brown Just finished this today, I couldn't put it down, thank you for writing this!

JJack Thank you for your honesty and vulnerability. Your story truly resonates with me. An emotional journey indeed.

Carmel Thank you, thank you, for writing this book. If empathy is the attempt to understand everyone's story, I'm so glad to have a chance to understand you and your story. Keep on!!

Nancy Bryant I almost stopped reading this book about halfway through it--maybe because it's so painful. I did finish it and it's amazing. I don't know if I could ever be that revealing and honest. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Susie Roxane a truly amazing book. A privilege to have you share these things with me. Very hard but at the same time inspiring to listen to as a woman, person, daughter and mother. I listened to the audio book and lovely to hear it read by Roxane. Gave it even more depth. Thank you so much.

Rebekah Thank you for writing this. Just thank you.

Cristina Picca Thank you Roxane. Your story is simultaneously raw and eloquent. My thoughts were provoked and my heart aches, but your strength stood out to me the most.
