it was amazing

Thoroughly impressed by "The Giver," a two-decade old gem in a genre that basically always leaves me wanting more. No, this is concise & has all the basic elements of a dystopian horror tale. The sketchy subjects of individuality and color (in that pleasant "Pleasantville" way) and community are handled incredibly well (yes, "Hunger Games" is a rip off of this & Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" and William Golding's "Lord of the Flies")--the subject of infanticide just gives this classic YA the push requisite to make it epic & essential both.

Because we were on the topic of the Holocaust, we were given to read "Number the Stars" (also exemplary) so I never got to experience this. Perhaps I would've become a bigger fan of sci-fi (or YA novels) well into adulthood?

N I taught it to middle schoolers and it is the best YA novel that introduces dystopian themes. I also recommend Nancy Farmer's The House of Scorpion.

Murf the Surf I loved this book and just got it tonight on Netflix . I'd watched this with a buddy for pajama night and popcorn. The movie was updated a bit and some changes obvious. Was that Taylor Swift? If there is a sequel, where are they going with book two? Also, wasn't the original book from the nineties? Inquiring minds must know! lol

Greg It's on my to-read shelf!

Jamie (The Kansan Reader) I remember my sophomore year of high school, my librarian had this on her list of banned books. I knew then I had to read it. I loved it. Have yet to watch the movie.

Morgan I also read "Number the Stars" in school (remains one of my favorites), but only read this a year or two ago! I can see why so many people love this book. It is PHENOMENAL!

Cecily If you really want more, I believe there are sequels. (Personally, I'm happy with the ambiguous ending of this.)
