More Amusing Than Profound. This book didn't measure up to Atwood's previous work. Handmaid's Tale and some of her other books provided profound and frighteningly realistic glimpses into what could happen in our society if we let our guard down. Unfortunately, this book was so whiny and two-dimensional that it came across as almost a parody of doom-saying. The author was so preoccupied with making up cute, punny names for the corporations and products portrayed (there must have been about three on every page) that she undermined the credibility of her own characters and plot elements and reduced them to overdone stereotypes (Evil Mankind and Corporate Greed Versus the Poor Defenseless Planet.) Also, her choice to gradually reveal the plot through reminiscences backfired, due to the distracted and random nature of her main character's thoughts. The end result was a story that was entertaining enough, but not likely to make you think too deeply about its subject matter.
