American Gods (American Gods, #1)

The Good:
This book is crammed with good ideas and it's very well written. Gaiman's evocative prose is best displayed through the stories of several supporting characters, including the origins of Mad Sweeney (view spoiler) .
The Bad:
The best stories in the book were all subplots. The protagonist always seemed like a spectator and a victim, and so the main plot dragged on before sputtering to a finish.
'Friends' character the protagonist is most like:
Shadow was easy to pity, but hard to like and even harder to understand. He is Ross Geller without the pet monkey.
