//New Review:
I really need to re-review this to grapple with the contradictions of Orwell the political figure and 1984 the political book. My updated review of Orwell: /review/show...
//Old Review:
"Orwellian"... The masterpiece on propaganda, surveillance and perpetual war that synthesized growing Cold War power politics into "Big Brother", "doublethink", "thoughtcrime", "Newspeak", "2+2=5", "Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past"...
Given Orwell was a democratic Socialist with a strong anti-Stalin stance, I am curious what his views of international Communist parties were, especially with his checkered history with British power structures (Indian Imperial Police, BBC, Orwell's List). Did he confront one villainous power structure by participating in another?
Another consideration: how is this book interpreted and used, given its wide, diverse audience?
"Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past" should be the cautionary preface to every interpretation of history. Our perception of the past is the foundation from which we build our imagination for the future...
