Annihilation (Southern Reach, #1)

In terms of suspense, what VanderMeer does in this novel is masterful. There's a real sense of a creeping inevitable in this story, from the unnamed protagonists to the causal mentions of hypnosis to haunting descriptions of what came before this expedition. But there's something that kind of gnaws at me about this book and that's the fact there are no answers, no real motives, and an ending that left me reaching.
So again, an absolute triumph of tone, beautifully written with a really cool unreliable narrator, but the actual meat of the story is a bit light. It's entirely possible that I'll come back and bump this review up to a five after finishing the trilogy, but for now, it's missing some of the story depth I'd need to do that.
