I remember reading it in high school & being deathly afraid of hot dogs for a few weeks -- which is not a good thing in Chicago. =-O

Agreed. I do not have the courage to read this. I did read Fast Food Nation, and found it fascinating--and that's enough for me.
Sinclair's intention was to portray working class living condition and exploitation, but it seems more people read it as you did.
This book is not about the meat industry. And, books are the medium of ideas. They should cover all part of these ones.
