You need skill to pull off prose this simple in such a meaningful, almost zen-fashion. Gilead is one of those books that simultaneously calms and haunts me. I feel the better for having read it. The book is deep without even coming close to preachy...great narrative voice and a strong storyline. Highly recommended.
