it was amazing

"Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul."

"Had I not somehow tampered with her fate by involving her image in my voluptas?"

"There is nothing more atrociously cruel than an adored child."

"Whatever evolution this or that popular character has gone through between the book covers, his fate is fixed in our minds, and, similarly, we expect our friends to follow this or that logical and conventional pattern we have fixed for them."

I enjoy this book a lot more than my first attempt a few years back. This is understandable given how extensive and oftentimes unnecessary his stylistic prose and vocabulary are. Also, I'd like to think the growing experience bank I've got has something to do with it too. There is an overwhelming sense that the author, or H.H. himself, has been toying with the readers psychologically. He even went so far as to list things he knows are expected from him as well as casually dropping inept remarks about his own condition. It is truly a book to fully read, rather than to take at face value.

All in all, it was a thrilling, beautifully written piece of literature, which got me hooked throughout. (view spoiler) He managed to draw me in and join him in the many moral, ethical, and psychological questions that he raised, despite still presenting himself, through his actions, as a truly despicable person. (Really not sure who "he" is at this point. This novel is a masterpiece in deception and Nabokov depicts his narrator as one with this skill also). The blurred lines of psychology once again sparked my interest.

One personal note is that the actual "twist" was quite anticlimactic for me, which is frustrating given how invested I was in the book. Basically, I guessed wrong, and was not properly convinced otherwise.

Definitely something that requires deep and unbothered concentration to even begin to appreciate.
