Reading for the 2nd time. Most recently started July 30, 2022.
I really hate to give this novel such a low rating. I gave it a 2/5 which, to me, usually means there were some extreme writing/story/characters flaws. This story however, was not glaringly flawed; it was simply uninteresting...so uninteresting that I just couldn't manage to give it any higher of a score.
It's pretty difficult to connect with a main character who you know nothing about. By the end of the book, I still knew nothing about her, and didn't feel like I even had time to enjoy her character, even though this book was almost 400 pages. Because of this, I found myself simply not caring; not about her relationships, her past, her future...the writing was just not compelling enough for me to care.
I was expecting a fun summer romance as the storyline, and while I did get that, it was only for like 50 pages, which was extremely unsatisfying, and the adventure aspect of it was not enough to carry the majority of the novel.
I found myself assigning actors to each of the 4 characters she meets on her travels, as I needed some kind of visualization to keep me from just putting it down; because, again, it was hard to care about any of the people in this story when you're given so little time with each of them.
Also, I have no problem with a story that tries to teach some sort of lesson, but this story in particular was a bit too in my face about it; every single section seemed like it felt the need to wrap things up in a nice quotable line about living in the moment, appreciating what you have etc. I guess I just found it annoying.

""But wasn't it worth it? It was still the greatest night of your life, right?" Ahh shut up Leila! Getting flashbacks to Margo from Paper Towns, too self centered to deserve the boy's attention."

"Oh, his section is over. Will we revisit or is he gone for good? I quite liked him, definitely connected to him more than Leila. That portion I give a 3.5/5 The storyline was good, writing well done, pacing was solid, conflict was there..but nothing spectacular."

"Hudson in my head was Dev Patel (from Slumdog Millionaire). I have no real clear picture of Leila yet."

"I give Bree's section pretty much the same rating. It was fine but all these little sections are like short stories, but too short to reeeeally get invested in the characters. Each person is someone who's life is affected by Leila, they each teach each other something usually via some very purposefully quotable inspirational dialogue."

"His portion was nice too, it felt a bit longer. It ended nicely too. I pictured him like Raviv (Ricky) Ullman...really random I know."

"Wondering if there's more to Leila's story (well, I mean obviously there is because we still don't know much about her) but I'm wondering if she has some bug secret, like she's been held captive her whole life or something."
