This was a tough one to rate. The premise started out well - a wealthy tech genius unleashes a daemon program posthumously that begins to take over the entire net and eventually the global economy. It starts off small, with a few strange murders disguised to look like accidents. Unfortunately, it gets a little far fetched at the end, with the daemon's minions (disaffected humans recruited to further the cause) happily destroying the lives of innocent people, building almost unbelievable weapons. The scope is just too much to believe.

Another problem is that too many of the characters are impossible to like. The plot is depressing. The few decent people trying to fight the daemon are just not enough. At first I thought Suarez was going to be one of those authors that treats women like decorations, not people. We have a detailed description of a rape just a few chapters in. Another female character is shallow and vain, and happily sells her soul to the daemon just to keep her fame and her lavish lifestyle. In fairness, almost all of his male characters are deeply flawed as well. Finally, we get a female who is smart and capable, a tech genius herself who is trying to stop the daemon.

And the ending is a cliffhanger. Joy. I will probably read the next book, but not right away.
