THE ENDING THE ENDING!! I can´t wait to read the next one
Red Queen was a journey for me, not just because of the things that happened but also in the way the book made me feel. I have the tendency while reading a book to assign a certain rating depending on how the story is progressing and truly I have never changed my opinion over a book so many times like with this one. One chapter I could be thinking this is definitely a 5 star book, but then some chapters later for me it deserved 3 stars and later 4 and even 5 again and back to 3, bottom line it was crazy.
Talking about the things that I disliked first
I feel like this book was the child of other stories I have read before and it was impossible for me to separate Red Queen from them. It was a crazy mix of Game of Thrones, The Selection (a little bit), Pawn, Shadow and Bone and even The Hunger Games, I swear there was a line that was like “A revolution needs a spark and the first thing that came to my mind was Katniss face. Don´t get me wrong it was a good book and had many original things but some others were painfully similar to very popular books in the market, at least I feel that way.
Mare was another element that annoyed me. At first she was fine, I liked her, her motivations, she was brave, but then she believed a little too much that she was the turning point of all the events that were happening and that´s where she started to annoy the crap out of me. I understand that she is special but seriously girl you are not the last drink in the dessert. Also her stupidity was so big, I saw the plot twist coming since the very beginning and the fact that she never questioned that particular character even when a very wise character tell her to do so was an idiotic move. I really hope that after the things that happened to her in this book she can grow up in the next installments of the series.
The romance was so lacking, at the beginning I could feel the sparks rising between two characters but then the author threw the relationship development out of the window and she expected me to believe the burning romance that fueled betrayals (seriously?).
The world building was also very underwhelming, but I guess more explanations are going to happen in the next book. It is a debut fantasy novel so I can forgive the faults in the construction of the world.
Now to the positive
The villains, they were sneaky, their plan was brilliant, they blindsided completely the good guys and I left the book loving my hatred for them.
The class division. The premise about being Silver and having powers or being a Red and basically a regular human was fascinating to me. I loved the dynamics of the world and it gave a solid ground to the fights are going to happen in the next books in the hopes to change the system.
The court intrigue. I simply love when there is court intrigue in a story, and in this one it was made to perfection. Love me some scandalous moments and Red Queen had plenty.
The final 15% of the book was in few words the perfect way to finish a book that was ok until then but that jumped to being awesome in the last few pages. It was set in giving Red Queen 3 stars but the last 40 pages were divine.
Overall a good story with an amazing finale that it is going to make the wait for the next book very painful.
