This novel means so much to the political and historical colombian context. I read some reviews that says that readers did not understand the book and for that reason they hate it. I think that this book is for people who really like to study or investigate about history and tradition. The colombian and latinoamerican culture could be complex for foreign people, so before to criticize, is important to know a little bit about the real metaphor and symbolism of the book, because the fact that you don't understand the book, does not mean that the novel is a mess or that García Márquez is a bad writter. I think that the language is not an obstacle because I have read some reviews of people who read the novel in english and really enjoy it, so may be they made a complete research before or they had an extensive knowledge about Colombian history.
So, like a latinamerican has to know about France to understand Proust or Modiano, you as a foreign should know about Colombia before read García Márquez books.
Finally, I recomend you that investigate about civil war in Colombia, traditional parties in Colombia, geopolitical spaces in the country, and colombian customs. Anyway, if after do that you continue thinking that the book is a mess, is because you are unable to admire the latinamerican continent and it is very respectful.
