The story of two disparate, intellectually superior female ensconced in a luxurious Parisian apartment building. Paloma is a precious pre-teen who feels superior to all members of her family and alienated from the world. She decides to end it all on her 13th birthday. Renee is a 54 year old social recluse. She is the concierge and hides her true personality and self from prying eyes.
Into the building a wealthy Japanese business man enters. He sees a great deal about Renee.
I found myself noting and highlighting very interesting passages from the book but I was no overall entranced by the characters or the story. The 'revelation' of Renee's past happens very late in the book, as it should but there is no hint to it in the books preceding pages.
And the ending was it cheap, did the author not know how to proceed once Renee is revealed and decides to embrace life? Or is the measure too profound to have dawned upon me?
