Just think, 8 years passed between the publication of this book - 1811 - and the publication of Scott's "Ivanhoe" in 1819. So, okay, was Austen just way ahead of her time, way ahead of Scott in talent? (In comparison, "Ivanhoe" is pretty crappy. And derivative. Yet it is still being forced upon unsuspecting grade schoolers. Sad.) So, yea, Austen's brilliance shines bright: this one is simply a great comedy of manners. It's almost perfect. It's just that getting into an Austen novel takes some time, as the winding prose can be...winding. But a long and winding road is often worth it.
