I enjoyed it mostly as a sort of nostalgia piece. I was living in NYC when Patti came to fame, and was going to CBGBs to see all the punk bands. I saw Patti perform often. As a fan of her music, I thought the writing would be better. It seemed kind of flat, and oddly surfacey; as well as a bit precious, with the endless references to Rimbaud, Baudelaire, William Blake, etc. I thought Maplethorpe seemed like a real user and a narcissistic jerk, and Patti was being used. I couldn't get into focus his apparent charisma. I wish I knew more about just how she was able to roll with his life as a gay hustler into S & M. I wanted more insight from Patti. I did like seeing the photos of the two of them in their youth. A mixed bag for me.
