Wow. I just dont even know how to rate this book.... I really enjoyed it but simultaneously disliked it, probably because the main character is so strange, and disconnected and even revolted by humanity. It was definitely a page turner, I could not stop reading it. I also really loved the writing style and all Suskind's descriptions of scents and the manufacturing of perfumes. It piqued my interest, and afterwards did more reading about modern day perfume making.
Also, Suskind is quite funny. For example, in the first few pages, the description of the main character's mother, "Grenouille's mother, who was still a young woman, barely in her mid-twenties, and who still was quite pretty and had almost all her teeth in her mouth and some hair on her head and-- except for gout and syphilis and a touch of consumption-- suffered from no serious disease, who still hoped to live a while yet, perhaps a good five or ten years..."
And even some generally insightful comments such as, "Man's misfortune stems from the fact that he does not want to stay in the room where he belongs."
It was definitely a quick read, and somehow less disturbing than you'd think it would be. which is perhaps why its even more disturbing.
