Michael Cunningham’s book jacket blurb calls Room “entirely original and says “I can’t compare it to any other book. Anita Shreve’s says “It’s unlike anything I’ve ever read before. Got to agree.
The voice of the narrator, a 5-year old boy who has been confined for the first half decade of his life to one small room, is unique. Despite their captivity, his mother manages to diligently entertain and educate him within this limited physical space until his language skills and numeric comprehension surpass those of the average 5 year old. His observations of the world are, naturally, odd, but his views are often startling perceptive. The book is often funny and the story and characters very engaging. It made me stay up, bleary-eyed, past my bedtime, and that almost never happens.
