Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief

I am finally finished with this book! This book took me SO long to finish. SMH. Honestly, there is such a thing as too much of a book. There were too many examples of each crime Scientology ever committed. I can say that the author thoroughly researched and fact checked each detail but that he did not need to include each and every detail. It was just too much.
I got this book as an audiobook. I think that this format made it hard to follow. I'd often wonder whose story I was hearing about and why. It was usually from the viewpoint of Paul Haggis. Then I would learn the life story of L. Ron Hubbard and that was most confusing of all. The book itself was quite informative. I was horrified by what I learned. LRH was an odd but brilliant individual who believed his own hype. He also managed to make many other people believe it. The crimes against humanity that were committed by normal people who got swept up in the myth of LRH is unbelievable. These people would abandon their spouses, give up custody of their kids and labor for years because LRH told them to. It is especially surprising because his stories/beliefs were ludicrous. By the time David Miscavige came to power the stories were just abusive. He is a power hungry Napoleon with delusions of grandeur.
What bothered me the most about what I learned is how similar it is to most religions. They start out with a theology and somehow evolve into something twisted. Its usually due to their leaders. The saying "absolute power corrupts absolutely" has been proven true time and time again.
