Spoilers. Also a huge rant over my emotions....
I cannot deny that this book is entertaining, suspenseful, and addicting. I love the development of Feyre, the beautiful writing, and the storyline. I somewhat like the Night Court in a way and some action scenes are done in a way that are masterful, intense, and readable.
First of all: plot. What plot? The entire storyline is orchestrated to bring Rhys and Feyre together. It highlights how Rhys is flawless in every way possible. All the scenes lead up to a bland, cheesy romance with no real depth. By the way, I do not ship them together because I find them to be forgettable and not endearing. In ACOTAR, I shipped Tamlin and Feyre; at the end, Rhys was very morally questionable and interesting that I couldn't help but lean on him a little more. In ACOMAF, everything changes, which leads me to dislike this book with a raging passion.
But this book is a let down because of the 180 degrees change in the characters. Like seriously, what happens to sweet Tamlin and what happens to Rhysand who was morally gray and questionable? I believe that the character of Tamlin is destroyed in order to make way for Rhysand. I feel like after this book, the first book didn't exist. The way this book is written makes it seems like ACOTAR was a huge fucking lie to all my emotions that I felt. I also cannot stand the fact that Rhys is the definition of perfection and good, whereas Tamlin represents evil and corruption. What Maas uses is character manipulation; I do not need to be pushed to like or hate someone. There isn't any depth or any gray areas to those two characters. Rhys is too perfect to be true and damn, I feel incredibly sorry for Tamlin because he deserves so much better than someone who keeps tarnishing his character for the sake of a ship. I also have to say that I miss the flaws and hidden depth of the two characters that made them worth of sympathy and admiration; I did get invested with Tamlin and Rhys before all this. A truly skilled writer does not resort to manipulation to force their desired ship onto their readers by destroying the characters' personalities; it's weak and outrageous when one does it. You know, I wouldn't mind it if Feyre chooses another love interest and just falls out of love with Tamlin because love could fade over time. Some relationships aren't meant to last for understandable reasons. Turning Tamlin into a douchebag to push the new absolutely flawless Rhysand into the story does not sit well with me.
Also, what happened to the humorous Lucien who was charming and memorable? In this book, we barely get to see him, and he isn't all that interesting or funny. I just can't help but feel betrayed because this series has the potential to be better. It's a damn shame because I loved ACOTAR and had high expectations for the sequel. Ugh. This may be my most disappointing read of the year. It's also safe to say that I won't be coming back for more because I stopped caring for most of the characters.
