The Handmaid’s Tale (The Handmaid's Tale, #1)

The opening of this book is slow, but as a strategy used intentionally by Atwood to draw readers into her world, it worked beautifully. The further I read, the more I wanted to draw comparisons to the world we're living in. Which is exactly her purpose, I think. I found her story poignant, and the Historical Notes chapter at the end brought the whole thing beautifully full circle. I even appreciate her subtle comments not just about our current state of society but also about how we talk about cultures from the past. This is a brilliant novel that should be on every reader's book list.
