The Book Thief

"Brilliant and hugely ambitious" says one of the reviewers in the New York Times and I fully agree with that statement. This novel by the young Australian author, Markus Zusak, is a real treasure. First of all, the style is unique and new. Death is the narrator and we get to know him as a compassionate figure who is forced to fulfill his sad but necessary tasks. What struck me, aside from the fascinating story of Liesel and her family and friends during Nazi Germany, is the author's abilility to present some of the sad and terrible situations with a certain amount of humor, without it being offensive. Reading this book, you cry with one eye and laugh with the other in the true sense of the word. Excellent work of fiction. I look forward to more by the same author.
