it was amazing

I will address what it is like to read the book (or more correctly, listen to it), since I cannot do justice to it. I noted with amusement that there are several short summary and explanation books on the topic, but I recommend you rad the book (slowly, see below). It is entertaining and thought-provoking and the details and experiments describe help you absorb the truths (that in fact is one of the things he explains).

The book starts out describing how System 1 and System 2 work. Lots of interesting tidbits about how we think and the odd effects it has on our decisions. I think of it as useful, interesting, and amusing "What fools we mortals be!" stuff, much like Daniel Gilbert's "Stumbling on Happiness", which always makes me chuckle. He even describes how explaining things as System 1 and System 2, although professionally poor, helps us better understand and takes things to heart, due to our System 1.

Slowly the book gets increasingly deep, more and more thought provoking, less amusing. Still head-scratching - wow, I didn't know we were that illogical(well, from a classic economist's viewpoint) - but triggering deep thoughts about how we should consider our own decisions and those of others. After a while I started feeling I was reading a textbook, but a well-written and absorbing one at that. A little harder to keep going, and a little harder to find neat little take-aways to remember, but worth the effort.

As I mentioned, I listened to the book-on-tape and found this a very useful way to read it. Every time I'd end up with another new thought to mull over for a day or two. Listen or read, I recommend doing it slowly, put it down, pick it up again a few days later. And, as I will do, re-read it again later.
