There is a brilliant novel buried in the some indulgent furious prose that is full of contempt for the reader. I really enjoyed the brilliant novel and wished the indulgence has been excised. Full review on NPR next week.

Mindy Jones Sounds like Franzen.

message 6: by Sascha (new)

Sascha Z Do you have a link to the full review? Thanks!

Kathy So true. Did anyone actually edit this book?

ashwini I found it exceedingly misogynistic (which I never thought about his previous novels). Do you agree?

message 9: by Jessie (new)

Jessie This is such a great review.

Jessie This is such a great review.

message 11: by Stan (new)

Stan don't really get the contempt for readers thing...I don't feel that way at all. Sounds like the critic is trying to garner some attention for herself at the expense of the author.

message 12: by Nich (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nich Eggert I didn't get the contempt thing either, if anything I felt like their was quite a lot of pandering going on.

Rachel Rosenthal Well said. I felt that way about The Corrections and am relieved to know I'm not the only one with that impression of Franzen.

Martina I'm only on page 279 of the paperback and I think I might stop reading. The structure of the book is such that as soon as I get pulled into a character's point of view and their story takes off, he moves on to a completely new character. Yes, there are many strengths to this book, but not enough to slog through 600 pages, about fifty percent of which is backstory and exposition rather than the story at hand. Self-indulgent & furious is right.

Sander "There is a brilliant novel buried in here" is almost as lacklustre as the good old "tour de force".
"Self-indulgent prose that is full of contempt for the reader" is another way to describe poetry, I guess though I don't really see how you could say that about "Purity", being one of Franzen's novels that is pretty much devoid of the wonderful indulgent ferocity you find in his other novels.
