Where to begin, what to say...?
First off, I adore Hepburn. I think she might be the greatest movie star we've ever seen, and a wonderful actress to boot. I can't recall watching her in anything where I wasn't at least a little bit in awe of her. So I'm biased, and would enjoy, to some degree, any opportunity to read about her.
I gave this book four stars. I thought about giving it one star. Or zero stars. It is just horribly written. I mean, it isn't even written. It seems like Hepburn just yelled into a tape recorder and someone transcribed it. Not even yelled, it feels like it was barked. Her sentences, paragraphs; all bizarre. Here are some of my favorites...
"Here we go--action--right leg out of the way. Right. You take the hose. Give me the soap. Right. O.K. Soak my head. More water--hot--better. O.K. Off. Now the soap. Good--Enough. I'll rub. Oh, it feels so great."
"Of course, you have to be very careful not to worry the root and just bare the root and expose it--that's right--now turn it a bit more. That's fine. Oh--and when you put the manure in, mix it very carefully so you don't burn the roots by direct contact. "
"Absolutely generosity--no strings--give give give. Dear Luddy, thank you."
WHAT?!?
I mean, I know she is a movie star and not a writer but come on, she went to Bryn Mawr, she should be able to put together a sentence.
And yet, I couldn't stop reading, loved every bit about her independent minded parents, her nearly 30 year affair with Spencer Tracy, her 3 year relationship with Howard Hughes (didn't realize!) who taught her how to fly, her experiences on stage and screen, her incredible athleticism even into old age, enjoyed every bit even as I was shaking my head thinking, what on earth am I reading?!
And I also must say, very plainly, that Hepburn is absolutely, positively out of her mind cray cray. Certainly something I would have guessed but reading her memoir, yup, it is true!!
