The Road

So, we read this for school and I gotta say, I hated it.
I love apocalyptic stories, I do, but this one was just awful. There wasn't really anything to it. Fifty pages would go by and it's like nothing even happened. There's no plot. You could literally tear out the beginning, middle, or end and still be left with what the Road is. There's nothing to it.
Also, there's like, no punctuation. No commas, barely any apostrophes (ugh, I'll get to that later), and there are no quotation marks! What!
It's also totally inconsistent. The whole book is third person EXCEPT some random paragraph on page 87 (the paperback version), where it's suddenly first person narrative. I've looked everywhere and there's no explanation for this. So what the heck. As well as that, there's inconsistencies in grammar and punctuation. Some words have apostrophes and some don't. It's frustrating and weird and there's no explanation or point, so honestly it just looks like the author is trying super hard to be different and unique. Sorry (not really).
To be fair, the lack of grammar and punctuation did help to distract me from the lack of plot. So. It wasn't all bad.
And, it's great that it's post-apocalyptic, but that's never really explored. The only time the end of the world is mentioned is the man remembering a bright flash in the sky and a rumble. That's literally it. Is it a meteor? Is it a bomb? Is it Superman? Who-freaking-knows?
On top of that, the world is only ever described as:
1. Cold
2. Grey
3. Dark
4. Covered in ashes
There's nothing descriptive about this book, unless it's describing some awfully gruesome death or something. I don't mind those, actually, because then I get to read some real, diverse adjectives.
Basically, if I could give this book negative stars, I would. I disliked it all. I guess the only redeeming quality it would've had, is the post-apocalypse thing. I was expecting some action, not a 40-year-old's angsty inner monologue.
All in all, it would've been better with zombies.
*EDIT: After posting this review and just glancing at the description of The Road by Cormac McCarthy, I would like everyone to take a gander at my list of Top 4 adjectives used to describe the setting of The Road and I think you'll see that every one of them has made it into the description of this awful book, please and thank you.
