The Giver (The Giver, #1)

I actually downgraded from 3 stars to 2. I really didn't like this book.
It had such a heavy-handed moral message, delivered as if it was told by a preacher in a church. It was too much for me.
Also, I could not identify with any of the characters in the book. What's more, the cautionary tale is inconsistent. This dystopian community isn't supposed to have feelings; that's the bottom line of the story. However, they clearly feel anger, as several times people in the community get angry when others don't stick to the rules. They also feel pain, as the children and the old get disciplined with canes, and they also must feel fear, to learn to avoid the cane. I could go on and on about the other emotions that are clearly present in this community of humans that have no feelings and emotions. Since the entire story is based on this premise, the inconsistencies annoyed me.
All in all I wouldn't read another book by this author - too preachy for me.
