** spoiler alert ** I love Jodi Picoult's writing and the story hooked me: I read it in one sitting. On a personal note, part of this book touched me in a way that I don't think any book ever has. So thank you so much, Jodi, for that. I can't put into words how much I needed to read this book.

That said, as a recovering criminal defense attorney, I absolutely hated the ending, which is hard for me to wrap my mind around. I guess I draw the line when people admit to committing murder--on the stand--and aren't convicted. I also had an extremely strong aversion to Chris. Especially after reading about the *first* time Em had to punch his head repeatedly to avoid being raped. Not. Okay.
