** spoiler alert **
Okay, I've finally finished. This was a very, and I mean very slow read for me, but at least I finished it. I usually don't finish books that start off slow. But for some reason, I really wanted to finish this one. Now my thoughts: I would have given it 3 1/2 stars however, I'm limited.
The main protagonist: Mare Barrow irritated me at times. She made decisions without thinking and her powers were very limited throughout. She spends most of the time hanging out with Julian (the guy who teaches her how to use her powers) and the other times going back and forth between two brothers. One of them being very jealous of the other, just ugh. I've heard of that before so nothing original there.
The ending blew me away--there was a twist I wasn't expecting at all. But I really wanted more out of it. It reminded me too much of Game of Thrones, however was a breath of fresh air there weren't any Joffreys.
I give the author a plus for thinking of dividing the worlds into two different colors, RED was supposed to be the people who didn't have any supernatural abilities so they were considered weak. And SILVER, were the people with those supernatural abilities. And if you were red, your blood was red and if you were silver your blood was well, silver. So kudos for that--very original there.
Now back to Mare--I'm really hoping that we get more out of her, in part two. YES I will be back to read part two simply because I want one of the brothers to choke it. Can't give away too much, but one of them, you simply can't trust! And the other is all about his "job." I kind of felt like the main guys all had a crush on Mare, so I would like to see more love interests on other characters other than the main one. Also, this book needed more diversity--which it lacked completely.
I also would have loved to see less individual houses. I feel like after Harry Potter--all we get is people sorted into houses now. Which made me think of Divergent (with the houses and poor people stuff) but in a medieval kind of way. If that makes sense. All and all, its okay--nothing to brag about and I've heard a lot of it before. It wasn't super bad, but I really want more as this story continues to be honest.
