“Are you good, or are you clever? I didn’t know how to answer that. I’d spent so long living with this monstrous thing I’d done that I didn’t feel either anymore.
Listen, I absolutely love this book but if you have two children and you name one of them Alasdair and one of them Oliver then you are reaaally banking on the first one to be the main character. I read this several years ago when it first came out [does that make me a Mackenzi Lee hipster? lol] I think I probably got it off a recommendation list of books that were similar to This Dark Endeavor, another retelling which casts Frankenstein and the creature as brothers although both are pretty different aside from that. It's definitely less polished than her newer books, but I'm a sucker for a good Frankenstein retelling and I think for a first book it is absolutely outstanding. I really liked how she included steampunk elements in the story and made Mary Shelley a character as well. Definitely would recommend this as I feel like it's very underrated compared to her other stuff.
