At last an Ishiguro novel that I found totally absorbing and moving!

This book fascinates me as an allegory about racism and animal rights... and even environmental issues. As a society, we live in a state of permanent denial about our neglect and abuse and exploitation of the world around us, and it's amazing to read a book from the point of view of the exploited which is NOT a "rebel rebel" revolution/escape narrative. That story has been imagined so many times and it is so "inspiring"... This one is 1000 times more realistic... Lives of quiet desperation lot by glimmers of happiness and connection, dim semi-comprehension, denial... I find it utterly haunting

He is a novelist that I always think I SHOULD like; readers I respect recommend him, his characters sound compelling, his technique and tone are called masterful, dreamlike, poetic, and yet I usually find them numb and disorienting. This book has the same muted narration and meticulous descriptions of tiny banal feelings and emotions, but this time it really works.
More later.
