Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (The Wicked Years, #1)

Unlike many readers the musical didn't draw me to this book and I've never seen it. I just like revisionist versions of well-known stories and it sounded interesting. But Maguire's highly literate, satirical style just bored me to tears. I guess all those asides and references worked into the plot means something to people who've read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz but I didn't get any of them because I haven't read Baum's books nor even seen the famous film. So I found it quite tedious. The world of Oz just also never came alive to me nor did the deeply unlikeable, mostly two-dimensional characters. I wanted to sympathise with Elphaba but I never felt like I gained any insight into what made her tick. It also just felt like a literary exercise by a writer much more clever than me.
