DNF because I just could not do it anymore.
So, this book is a "popular" book. Popular books are always a huge hit or miss for me, mostly miss.
And this book was no different.
I read up to page 120ish and then I skipped ahead to see where it would go. So technically I didn't read it till the end but I read to know what happened. So it kind of works?
Yeah, I lost interest fast after that.
In concept it sounds interesting. A child growing up in a sterile environment...it sounds interesting. Execution though was flawed.
The biggest gripe had to be the POV. It might be my background though. I KNOW child development. I KNOW the psychology and the development of a child. This Jack kid was either a super genius/genetically mutated kid or a poorly written character. Kids are NOT that literate at that age. This KID COULD READ. Like actually read. At 5. He could count to high numbers. He could do taxes too probably! Who knows!
The kid also understand way too much of what mom was talking about. Abstract concepts? He's got it. Heck, he probably had object permanence as soon as he was born!
Anyway, I found the mom's story way more interesting than the kid's but the way she talks to the kid and whatnot. Yeah...no.
Also, this kid adjusted TOO well to leaving the Room and knowing about the outside world. NO. That kid's going to have PTSD or adjustment disorder if he's super resilient. Also the attachment issue with mom is out of whack so he's going to have terrible separation anxiety. Basically there are a lot of psychology problems that are not addressed(from the little bit I read when I skimmed ahead).
*sigh* Anyway, I'm done harping on this book. Moving on to hopefully better things.
