The Order of the Good Death is the organization Doughty founded. I discovered Caitlin Doughty, mortician, in the threads of twitter because I follow Death Cafe. Death Cafe's slogan is "drink tea, eat cake, talk death." These are facilitated (by a nurse, hospice worker or interested others) and are a safe congenial gathering to discuss end of life. Your own as well as others. Americans are terrible at death. Doughty touches on some of the historical reasons this is so. The privileged class gets to shuffle the whole messy business off to the funeral industry, at varying price structures-beginning with lots and ending with ludicrous. The memoir covers the years Doughty worked in a crematory and went on to mortician school. But it begins with a trip to the mall with her father when she was 8 years old and witnessed something none of us would get over. How she turned her horror into respect and a need to educate others is what the book is about. Anyone who is afraid of death would benefit from this good read.
