Rereading 8 and a half years later and this is a 100 times better this time around. The Hunger Games is a classic of our times but that's not enough to describe. When you know the fate that awaits the characters, to still feel emotional at the suggestions of their deaths, to be invested throughout the whole journey just proves how wonderful this book is. I picked this up because I picked the genre for my thesis and that meant paying extra attention the world building and politics. I wonder what Suzanne Collins saw in our world ten years ago that she designed a ruling ideology that makes a mark when we see the world as it is right now. I did not see the significance of this until several years after my first reading when discussions pointed it out. But it's so poignant and so powerful.
From my first reading, the adventure and action stood out to me. After reading the climax, I dreamed of the mutts scene. I'm glad now that something different, at a whole other level now stands out to me.
I have to put in a word for Katniss. Jennifer Lawrence's rendition of the character, from reading this now, in my opinion, misses the innocence of her character. Katniss is all of sixteen years old and no matter how skilled a hunter, the distrust, loneliness, fear she feels is a very significant part of her character. My first instinct at the end of the novel is to be annoyed with her, but it's a misjudgment on my part. This is the most authentic part of her.
Bumped up from 4 to 5 stars because this deserves everything.
