The book explores the link between a fisherman and the sealife, and what are the boundaries of that link. An old man talks with himself about his own life as a fisherman and how his youth is gone (symbolized by the boy Manolin who is deeply missed by the old man) and how important it is to keep fighting the battle against this big fish for finding his own identity. Eventually, catching the fish is no longer important, but to understand what the meaning of this battle is.

The old man ressembles the nature of humankind and his hunting toughts, performed by the genious of Hemingway who transforms the storyline a metaphore of the war against ourselves. This book talks about the fatigue, the strenght, and the mental connection between hunter and prey.
