Camus redacted the novel into a 200 page play. In the first line of his Forward he writes: The Possessed is one of the four or five works that I rank above all others.

It is a very strong book. A story without any heroes.

How do you mean: 'without any heroes'? How about 'the devils' that possessed the non-qualifying heroes?

Well, yes, of course, but not everyone calls devils heroes. There is for me just one touching scene, when Shatov’s pregnant and estranged wife appears on his doorstep during a terrible storm. He takes her and tries to make her comfortable and they even sort of reconcile and talk about a future with a baby that is not his. And then in the very next scene Shatov is executed by Stephen in a pointless demonstration.
