I loved this book! I was sad to see it end, and anxious to know what happens with Matthew and Diana. I've seen the mixed reviews, and honestly - I don't understand them. I've seen a few comments that Diana is too subservient to Matthew - I think she has a lot of the unknown happening to her, and that Deborah portrayed her fear and anticipation well - as well as that their relationship is starting to change as Diana comes into her own and Matthew learns to trust her. If Matthew truly was born in the 500's - the way he approaches the women in his life should be true to the history he's been a part of, and there is some order/customs to the vampire world that have to be woven in.
I love that the author has created a new world for us to live in - something ancient and historical, something full of puzzles and new twists. The romance is beyond just sex and some inkling of attraction - it grows in every way.... I also like that there is much to think about - hints for the future throughout the book, from the mention of gambit, to the legal document discussion, the house giving information...
My only disappointment is that I discovered the series just as the first book came out, instead of later, when i could start the next one, right away! It's hard enough to find a series where you can't wait for the next one.... and then how long a wait comes into play! I can see re-reading this when the next book comes out, because you'd need to remember some small details to have the next make sense....
Alright, Deborah - don't hurry through the next one if it'll undermine it... but don't make us wait too long!
