This series starts out at the horror end of the fantasy spectrum and moves to the romance end of the spectrum at around book 8. Very strong female lead character named Anita Blake. Complicated emotional relationships. I read the fairy princess series by this author first, and it was fun for me to see where some of the ideas in that series originated in this one.
