I had to put this book down for a while (not the book's fault) and just finished it today.
The simple summary is that as the result of a tragic hunting accident, one family gives their young son (LaRose) to another family to atone for their loss. But that is just the beginning because this is Louise Erdrich, and she is a master storyteller. There is a lot of Native American cultural history in this tale, which both enriches it and occasionally bogs it down. The ramifications of this act of atonement in the changes that it makes to the members of both families result in a powerful, positive message about healing. It also reminds us just how much we are all a composite of everything we have experienced.
