I am so torn on this one.

The opening chapters with Georgie and Mike recounting the beginning of the next coming of It are so well done and so horrifying and perfect.

The ending is bittersweet and even managed to make me a little teary eyed? I don’t know that any of his books other than The Green Mile have ever succeeded in that.

But please God, can we get a fucking editor in here?!

This does not need to be 1153 pages long. I can actually summon everything that happens up to page 900 in one sentence: a bunch of 38 year olds sit around the table and reminisce about the summer of 58.

And yes I understand that’s the framing device for telling us what happened in 58. But there was so much that could have been cut out. And it was so goddamn dense. There were entire chapters giving WEATHER REPORTS which had NO paragraph breaks. None.

And the length is a real disservice to the book, which does have something to offer, if you make it to the end, because the length is distracting and feels like a slog.

If I’m being honest, I don’t think IT and I were ever going to jive all the way. On the surface, it’s a story about murdered children, which is never really my thing. But it’s also a supernatural, metaphysical story.

And much like The Stand, King writes human villains so well that I can’t always get behind the make believe, clown in a sewer or demon in Vegas. I’d rather read a Brady Hartsfield or a Big Jim Rennie. I like horror better when the supernatural is set dressing for the real horror. I don’t know why.

And yeah I get it, this isn’t really a story about a clown in a sewer, it’s a story about the end of childhood and facing our own mortality. But I don’t think the message makes up for the rest of it (mostly the 1100 pages).

So I don’t know. I don’t think this one is as quotable as The Stand either which kinda bummed me out, though every once in awhile I stumbled across a profound thought or two.

Anyway. Excited to move on to Holly.
