Read 3 times. Last read September 15, 2024 to September 29, 2024.
Review on reread since I never wrote a review the first time. Shame on me.
One of the best opening lines and prologues ever. Seriously, I don't understand how anyone could read the prologue and not immediately want to read the whole book.
"It is important, when killing a nun, to ensure that you bring an army of sufficient size. For Sister Thorn of the Sweet Mercy Convent Lano Tacsis brought two hundred men."
Of course, a book is more than just its opening, and I will say the middle is a little slow. It relies more on the richness of the prose and coming to love the characters to hold a readers interest, and this doesn't always work for everyone. I reread this for a group buddy read, and sadly, the book didn't work for anyone but me. That's just the way reading goes, though! For me, however, I love Nona Grey and her little found family at the Convent of Sweet Mercy. I enjoyed the more day to day of learning and all of the girls coming into their skill sets. The school trope is a classic for a reason, and while there's variation here, it sticks to the goodness that's made it a classic trope.
I also love the world building, and the mystery slowly uncovered as you read. You know by the end of the book that so much more is happening outside of the Convent of Sweet Mercy. So many things. No spoilers. 🤠But because of the interlude chapters (beginning, middle, and end), you know so much more is coming for our characters. I also love a tease to spice the mystery of what's to come.
Anyway, as for the worldbuilding, though, I think it's done really well to uncover as you read. It feels like a real world and is super unique. Basically, humanity is reduced to a Corridor and enclosed on each side by ice. Again, I don't want to reveal too much as I think part of the fun of this book is coming to understand how different the world really is from ours.
I really liked this book, and I'm excited to continue on the series this time. 🤠I read Red Sister originally when it first came out and then did that thing where I bought the sequels as they came out but didn't get to reading them. 😅 For no real reason other than time, I'm guessing, since I was in law school at the time.
