Amie i haven't read this one but thanks for the warning! i don't tolerate books of ignorance.

message 2: by Margo (new)

Margo Kelly I second Amie's comment above - - books/tv/movies which perpetuate ignorance and intolerance are a huge source of frustration to me.

Thanks for your thorough review.

Kara you may not like the beginging of the book and i understand because i didnt either however as the book goes it starts to get better. the girl discovers here own love and beliefs and it is truly a fabulous book. i just wanted to say that even though the begining is not that great the book itself is wonderful.

Sarah Thank You, I am not mormon but my aunt is. And as I am reading the book all is that Hopkins doesn't know anything about Mormonism.

Sarah And it made me really mad.

message 6: by Emma (new)

Emma Thank you for your review. I'm not Mormon, nor do I have any friends that are, but I grew up in a religion that people didn't accept because they didn't understand and didn't want to understand. It hurt me, and still does even though I'm no longer active within the religion, that people would believe lies and prejudice purely because they refused to try and understand!

Ignorance such as this is not acceptable in my opinion. So, thank you for saving me from reading a book that seems to help perpetuate the lies and lack of understanding of religion.

Kara I understand where you are coming from and I am in 110% agreement that the prejudice in this book or any book is not appropriate in any manner. I am sorry if I stated my comment wrong in a way that seem as if i was saying that got better but i was meaning that the love story side of it got better and that the girl was able to go in her own direction and find a love for her self and that is the part of the book that i enjoyed. Again i appologise if i hurt you in any way i did not mean to.

Julie Couldn't of said it better! Not sure if I'll finish this book or not!

message 9: by Madeleine (new)

Madeleine Rex I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your speaking up for us LDS girls, specifically teens like myself. I am being brought up in a wholesome, loving, home and ward, and it makes me... not angry, but *sad* to see people so mislead.

Corin Smith I agree 100% completely, but i do believe in the book Pattyn did say that her family was trying to hide it, annnnnd that they werent partically the "perfect" mormons. But i do understand exactly where you are coming from. And yes kara, the book was just ignorent totally at the beginning, and had gotten alot better within the end. The love story behind it was breathtaking to a certain point, however the tragedy at the end was quite the twist, but also.... Ellen Hopkins books pretty much all contain a twist from parts to parts. Thats wht makes them so interesting! However i am sure Ellen Hopkins didn't mean to insult mormons or anything like that, thankyou for your time. :)

Camille I read this book and fell in love with the way Ellen Hopkins wrote her words. However the content pushed me away in a matter of time. The way she writes keeps a reader so in tune with actions taking place. However, I am also a member of The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I felt very mislead that she could write such profound words of idiocy. On the other hand, any author could have chosen to write about any religion in this circumstance. No matter what authors write, it is for the reader to research for themselves what the true content is. Most people do not do outside research to find out the real information. But being in a religion most people do not understand, we should be use to this kind of subjectivity. It shouldn't be anything new or different. It only makes us stronger in our own beliefs. :) Thank you Angela for these words! It really sparked my own understanding of this novel!
