I couldn't decide whether the strangely anachronistic technology was bad projection of 1960s technology cast into 1992 (for example being on a spaceship that can make it to the moon in 1 hour, but the phone book is a giant electronic box that prints out a punch card that feeds into the phone) or whether it was a feature of the story. I decided that given the wild and anachronistic way people dressed that it was intentional. This makes the novel much more enjoyable. And it makes the ending make more sense too.
I'd summarize the book as: Branding is the number 42.
