Read 2 times. Last read April 9, 1997 to April 16, 1997.
Among the first works of metafiction I ever read and, almost thirty years later, after reading other metafictional works (Breakfast of Champions, Pricksongs and Descants, Book, and The French Lieutenant's Woman, for instance) still one of the greatest. I enjoy the book not only for its employment of various generic conventions and narrative approaches to comment on the act of reading and on readers' expectations, but also for the style of the writing, in many instances as vivid and evocative as poetry. Highly recommended.
