A historiographic metafiction whose intertexts include Beyond the Pleasure Principle, Eugene Onegin, and Don Giovanni. The narrative begins by reproducing letters by Sigmund Freud and other psychoanalysts (and this resulted in some controversy when the novel was first published, as some thought that Thomas’s inclusion of letters and other quoted intertexts was an instance of plagiarism). The novel includes a transcription of Anna/ Lisa’s dream and/ or sexual fantasy and a representation of Freud’s interpretation of this. The themes of the novel include psychoanalysis and history, and the relation of these to narrative and narrative voice.
