Alfred North Whitehead said that all Western philosophy could be thought of as footnotes to Plato. Similarly, it could be argued that much metafiction (i.e., much of the work of Jorge Luis Borges, Vladimir Nabokov, Thomas Pynchon, John Barth) could be thought of as footnotes to Don Quixote. While one can find examples of metafictional devices in earlier works (such as the employment of embedded narrative in The Odyssey), Cervantes merits special mention as the first writer fully to explore many of the implications of self-reflexivity in fiction.
