** spoiler alert **
I enjoyed The Rook, and I looked forward to this sequel.
It pulled me in, immediately, and I enjoyed Odette and Felicity--both new characters. Myfawney (The Rook) was less of a focus in this book; that was a disappointment since the development of her character and her backstory/forgotten backstory was THE story of that text. In my opinion, this sequel struggled between providing the reader with riveting "action" (to the point of near predictability) and copious amounts of detailed history about the new characters and shadow government groups and their tensions.
I have to ask if Daniel O'Malley is setting us up for more in this series, and then all of the detailed history will have more relevant context, or if the world he created got away from him somehow?
Is the new "metal woman" character a set up for the next book? This seems like a segue into "what happens to those whose powers are never identified" and what happens when a shadow government agency has too much power. Or, is that just wishful thinking?
