I gave Lolita three stars not because of the writing but because of the subject matter. I read Lolita years after I'd seen the films. (And what baby boomer hasn't?) All of the movies I've seen sexualized Humbart's relationship with this child, and painted her as a femme de fatale in bobby socks.

Nabokov to his credit doesn't portrait Lolita as a seductress, but he does seem awfully sympathetic to Humbart: in the way that he deals with the characters around him. Maybe Hollywood was taking their clues from him? I won't say more, for those who haven't read it.

I will say this: Lolita, while brilliantly conceived and written, left a sour taste in my mouth. Perhaps that was was Nabakov's intent. If so, he really hit the ball out of the park.
