Gave up. The author's description of his (psychiatric, traumatized) women patients as "slender" and "gorgeous" is so annoying. (ETA: Especially considering that he is writing in the same breath about rape and incest survivors.)

Interesting note - I gave it 5 stars, I loved it - and I also noticed that gender issue (and forgot, it's so ubiquitous in everything). I did find the book extremely valuable for myself and the work I do, but duly noted and thx for the reminder.
I noticed this issue right away. I love love everything else about the book, but this aspect was concerning.
Thank you so much for the heads up with the language used. I was going to read this to work through some PTSD from rape but will definitely avoid it now!
Coukdnt agree more. Also I found his countless vivid Stephen king-like descriptions of war, dead bodies, and intentional torture of dogs in experiments made to cause them intense trauma to BE traumatizing in a sense. I could bear it. To be honest, I think the author is a narcissist writing his memoirs. I'm appalled by the popularity of this book.
I've got pretty severe PTSD and while the book definitely triggered me the knowledge I gained from reading it is well worth it.
In order to heal triggers, we have to press in to them. I agree that Van der Kolk is insensitive and voyeuristic in how he comes across. My guess is that he's overly honest- no filter. The book is so valuable, though, and he really does care about his patients. I think he just overshares, is all.
The problem is that he does not describe his male patients hotness. I literally don't give a fuck about what his female patients look like. I just want to hear about their experience and the research. We don't have to press into anything. He needs to stop sexualizing his patients.
Thought the same... how did he not catch this
